THE COPPER COAST GEOPARK

geopark200.jpgThe Copper Coast is an outdoor geology museum with a geological heritage hat reflects a variety of environments under which the area has evolved over the last 460 million years. Sedimentary and volcanic rocks illustrate the closure f the Iapetus Ocean and subsequent volcanism; the collision of 2 continents leading to the creation of Ireland – as part of a desert dissected by large rivers; nd, finally, the effects of glaciation during the Ice Age. Cross-sections of these are exposed along the spectacular cliffs and interpreted for the public at various oints. For a brief introduction to these rocks, a stroll around the Geological Garden in Bunmahon will prove instructive.

The Copper Coast gets its name from the 19th Century copper mines that lie t its heart.

It comprises some 25 kilometres of spectacular coastline consisting of calloped beaches and coves buttressed and enclosed by rocky headlands.

Oceans, volcanoes, deserts and ice sheets all combined to create the rocks, hich provide the physical foundation of the natural and cultural landscapes
of the Copper Coast.

The Copper Coast European Geopark is located on the South East coast of reland, between Tramore and Dungarvan in County Waterford.
